The German Ministry of Defense has proposed a significant investment in updating the Bundeswehr's service uniforms, with a budget of over 800 million euros.
This proposal, which has been submitted to the Bundestag's budget committee, aims to modernize the daily service attire worn by soldiers in various roles, including those in NATO and EU assignments.
The plan includes updating combat, work, and sports clothing, as well as formal dress uniforms.
However, the proposal has sparked controversy, with critics like CDU budget expert Ingo Gädechens questioning the prioritization of such a large expenditure on uniforms that do not enhance combat readiness.
The SPD's budget politician Andreas Schwarz has suggested that the decision might be postponed due to other pressing budgetary needs, such as ammunition and vehicles.
The modernization of service uniforms was initially decided in 2018 but was delayed to prioritize combat gear updates, which have now been completed.
