Controversial Garnisonkirche Tower Reopens

Published: 2024-08-22

The controversial Garnisonkirche tower in Potsdam has been officially reopened with a ceremony attended by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Originally built in 1735, the church was destroyed during World War II and later demolished by the East German government in 1968. The reconstruction of the tower, costing around 42 million euros, has sparked significant debate due to its historical associations with militarism and the Nazi regime.

Critics, including the initiative 'For a Potsdam without Garnisonkirche', view it as a symbol of terror, while supporters argue it serves as a site for peace and democracy education.

The Evangelical Church plans to use the site for critical historical reflection, with an exhibition titled 'Faith, Power, and Military'.

Despite protests, the tower is now open to the public, offering a panoramic view from its 57-meter-high platform.
