The German government has officially blamed Chinese hackers for a significant cyberattack on the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) that occurred three years ago.
A spokesperson from the Foreign Office stated that state-sponsored Chinese cyber actors infiltrated the BKG's network for espionage purposes.
In response to these findings, the Chinese ambassador in Berlin has been summoned, marking the first such action since 1989. The BKG plays a crucial role in providing geodata for critical infrastructure, including energy and water supply services.
The Interior Ministry revealed that the attackers used obfuscation networks, employing devices from private homes and businesses to hide their tracks.
The German government condemned the attack and urged China to cease such activities.
