Germany Considers Financial Aid for Deportees

Published: 2024-08-23

Germany's Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, is exploring the possibility of providing financial assistance to Afghan criminals facing deportation.

This initiative aims to overcome legal challenges that often hinder deportations.

The proposed "financial travel support" would be part of efforts to ensure deportations to Afghanistan are legally sound.

The decision on whether to provide such support and its amount would be left to the individual German states responsible for deportations.

This move follows Chancellor Olaf Scholz's announcement in June to resume deportations of serious criminals and terrorist threats to Afghanistan and Syria.

However, these plans face potential legal obstacles, as Afghan nationals may argue the risk of poverty upon return.

Currently, Germany already offers financial aid for voluntary departures of rejected asylum seekers, covering travel costs and initial support in their home countries.
