German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser plans to discontinue the federal admission program for vulnerable Afghans in 2025, sparking controversy within the government.
The program, initiated after the Taliban's takeover in 2021, aimed to provide safe passage for up to 1,000 at-risk Afghans monthly.
However, it has fallen short of expectations, with only 533 individuals admitted so far.
While the Foreign Ministry, led by Annalena Baerbock, opposes the decision, Faeser prioritizes internal security in the 2025 budget.
Those already approved for admission will retain their right to enter Germany, but new applications will cease.
The move highlights tensions between humanitarian commitments and domestic priorities in German politics.
