Germany's Speed Control Week Begins

Germany has launched its annual "Speedweek" to promote road safety by enforcing speed limits.

Police across 14 of 16 states, excluding Saarland and Berlin, are conducting intensified speed checks, particularly in accident-prone areas, school zones, and construction sites.

The campaign, also known as the "Blitzermarathon," aims to reduce speeding-related accidents, which accounted for a significant portion of last year's 2,780 road fatalities.

Wednesday, April 9, marks the peak of the operation, with states like Bavaria setting up 1,500 monitoring stations.

The initiative is part of a broader European effort led by the "Roadpol" network, with similar actions planned later this year.

Authorities hope the campaign will raise awareness about the dangers of speeding and encourage safer driving habits.
