Record Illegal Entries and Police Attacks in Germany

Published: 2024-08-19

Germany has seen a significant rise in illegal entries and attacks on police officers, according to the 2023 annual report by the Federal Police.

The report, presented by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, highlights 127,549 unauthorized entries into Germany last year, marking the highest number since 2016 and a 39% increase from 2022. Most entries occurred at the borders with Poland, Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic.

Additionally, the report reveals a record number of attacks on police officers, with 2,979 incidents, the highest since data collection began in 2001. These attacks, often involving physical violence, primarily occurred during routine duties and at railway stations.

In response to rising crime, the government plans to bolster the Federal Police with additional funding and personnel.
