Severe Storms Wreak Havoc in Southeast Brandenburg

Published: 2024-07-12

The fire department in Southeast Brandenburg, Germany, declared a state of emergency on Friday afternoon due to severe thunderstorms.

Since 4 PM, the regional control center in Lausitz reported nearly 200 weather-related emergency calls.

Three people, including two firefighters, were injured.

In Cottbus alone, dozens of operations were carried out between 4 PM and 6:45 PM, mainly dealing with flooded basements and fallen trees.

The German Weather Service had issued warnings for extreme weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong gusts.

By late afternoon, officials reported that the thunderstorms were gradually subsiding as the storm front moved across the Lausitz region.
