Summer Holiday Traffic Jams Hit German Highways

Published: 2024-07-06

As North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, begins its summer holidays, highways across the country are experiencing significant traffic congestion.

The ADAC (German Automobile Club) reported a sharp increase in traffic jams, with 142 jams spanning 382 kilometers by 4 PM on Friday.

Major bottlenecks were observed around Cologne, Duisburg, and Hamburg, particularly near the Elbe Tunnel.

The A1 and A3 highways were heavily affected, with drivers urged to exercise patience.

The ADAC expects this to be the first 'summer traffic wave', with peak travel times on Friday afternoon and Saturday.

Nearly 600 construction sites on NRW highways are contributing to delays and time losses.
