Youth Fear Greens More Than AfD

Published: 2024-08-26

A recent study by the Institute for Generational Research reveals a significant shift in young voters' perceptions of political parties in Germany.

The study found that a notable portion of young voters, particularly in the East, view the Green Party as a threat, with 30% expressing fear towards them, compared to 25% in the West.

This fear is only surpassed by the apprehension towards the far-right AfD, which stands at 65% in the East and 74% in the West.

The study highlights a growing trend of political fear among the youth, not just towards the AfD but also towards other parties like the Greens, which are often portrayed as extremist or restrictive.

Despite these fears, there is a notable tolerance among young voters for differing political views, with many expressing that friendships transcend political affiliations.

The study also points out that migration, right-wing extremism, and climate change are the top concerns for young voters, reflecting a complex political landscape ahead of the upcoming state elections in Thuringia and Saxony.
