Severe Storms Threaten Bavaria with Hail and Floods

Published: 2024-07-10

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of Bavaria, particularly in Upper Bavaria and Swabia.

With temperatures around 30°C (86°F), the region faces potential hazards including lightning strikes, hail up to 3cm in diameter, and heavy rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter.

The Alpine foothills are expected to be most affected, with risks of falling trees, landslides, and rapid flooding of streets and underpasses.

Storm gusts could reach speeds of 80 km/h (50 mph).

While most of Bavaria may escape unscathed, the DWD spokesperson warns that the potential for thunderstorms exists almost everywhere.

The severe weather is expected to subside by Thursday night, potentially giving way to localized fog.
